MIDS Low Volume Terminal

MIDS low volume terminal (LVT)

MIDS low volume terminal (LVT)

The MIDS low volume terminal (LVT) represents the latest generation of Link 16 equipment, incorporating secure data, voice, tactical air navigation (TACAN), and relative navigation functions into a small, affordable, and highly reliable unit.

Participants gain situational awareness by exchanging digital data over a common communication link that is continuously and automatically updated in real time, reducing the chance of fratricide, duplicate assignments, or missed targets. Each participant in the communication link is able to electronically see the battle space, including assigned targets and threats.

MIDS LVT FEATURES

  • Full Link 16 interoperability
  • 200, 40, and 1 W transmit power
  • 300 nmi range
  • 2.4 and 16 Kbps voice
  • Embedded TACAN

Production of MIDS LVTs began in October 2001. U.S. Navy F/A-18, EA-6B, and U.S. Air Force F-16 aircraft are receiving the terminals, providing much-needed enhanced information management capability and improving mission effectiveness and survivability. In June 2002, Data Link Solutions received a production order for 137 multifunction information distribution system low volume terminals, bringing the total U.S. production order to 340 terminals.

BAE Systems provided 12 MIDS LVTs for the early integration of Link 16 capability on the Eurofighter aircraft at the EADS-CASA facility near Madrid, Spain, and other integration sites in Europe. 16 additional terminals will be provided by Data Link Solutions to support production testing of Eurofighter at four sites in Europe.

These deliveries are in addition to more than 700 MIDS fighter data link terminals being supplied by Data Link Solutions to the U.S. Air Force for F-15 A/B/C/D/E aircraft.
