BAE Systems Donates $50,000 for Bishop Guertin Science Labs

16 Aug 2008

NASHUA, New Hampshire — BAE Systems has donated $50,000 to support the “Transforming Lives, Building Upon Excellence” campaign at Bishop Guertin High School. The campaign is raising funds for renovation of the school’s science labs.

The school is attempting to raise $400,000 to build science labs that will better serve students by providing a more flexible and effective learning environment. Five new science labs will be designed for biology, physics, and chemistry classes. Students currently are working with lesson plans and experiments in labs that are original to the school, which was built in the 1960s. BAE Systems’ contribution covers some of the costs of the construction, new technology, and amenities for the labs, which are scheduled to be complete by late August.

“BAE Systems’ contribution is critical to the ‘Transforming Lives, Building on Excellence’ campaign at Bishop Guertin,” said Karen Wiedner, director of institutional advancement for the school. “The company's donation represents a significant portion of the funds needed to make the science lab renovation a success.”

Tom Arseneault and Don Donovan, presidents of BAE Systems' Sensor Systems and Electronic Warfare businesses, respectively, presented the $50,000 check to Weidner and Brother Mark Hilton, president of Bishop Guertin High School.

BAE Systems' community support activities include educational initiatives that promote the study of science, engineering, and technology, and encourage interest by youth in these subjects as potential career fields. The centerpiece of these efforts is the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) robotics competition, to which BAE Systems nationally is a “Strategic Partner,” providing more than $1 million annually through donations of money, employee volunteer time, and other resources. Other areas of support include programs and organizations that support service members, veterans, and first responders.
