SUBMARINE SOLUTIONS GROUP
WHAT WE DO
One of the most exciting engineering projects in the world is undertaken right here, within our Submarine Solutions business group, which is acknowledged worldwide as a centre of submarine excellence.
BAE Systems Submarine Solutions is the prime contractor for the Astute submarine programme, the largest and most powerful attack submarines ever ordered by the Royal Navy. The first of class Astute left Barrow to begin sea trials in November 2009, while boats 2, 3, 4 and 5 are currently being constructed at the sprawling 169-acre shipyard.
Submarine Solutions is also the industry lead for the Successor nuclear-deterrent programme and is home to the Future Submarine Programme Office, where it is part of a collaborative team working on the replacement to the Vanguard class of submarines.
As part of the Aircraft Carrier Alliance, Submarine Solutions engineers are involved in the design of mid-sections for the future aircraft carriers, HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales, as well.
The Barrow shipyard has built every submarine currently in service with the Royal Navy and in 2007 secured its first export contract for more than 20 years, to supply submarine pressure hull domes to the Navantia shipyard in Spain.
YOUR DEVELOPMENT
During the first two years of the Graduate Development Framework (GDF) scheme, we want you to develop by moving freely around the Business Group, and also by meeting all the requirements of professional accreditation as you proceed. Between you, you and your business mentor will develop a structured training plan, with each placement typically lasting three months.
You'll certainly see the wider picture of submarine technology development – and it’s quite a picture. You may also have opportunities to work with suppliers and customers, and to further widen your experience through such extra-curricular activities as community work.
As Submarine Solution Graduates, you’ll have the opportunity to undertake Royal Navy leadership and management training alongside the Graduate Developing You (GDY) course that is offered as part of your development on the GDF.
We are also very committed to the local community and charity work, with the site in Barrow-in-Furness raising the most money for the Company’s Charity Challenge scheme for the past number of years. Graduates are encouraged to get involved with community projects and take from them extra development opportunities that may not be available in their current placement within the business. We have a large number of Graduates registered as Science and Engineering Ambassadors who work closely with the local schools to help encourage young people to study Science, Engineering, Technology and Maths subjects. These projects range from running Lego Robotics sessions with schools, to supporting Mock Interview days for students. We even have some Graduates acting as School Governors, helping to improve the local schools and education system.
At Submarine Solutions we have led the way in promoting external placements – we offer the opportunity to spend time with a number of external suppliers and customers, including local companies as well as key stakeholders such as Rolls Royce and the Ministry of Defence.
We have a dedicated team of people who look after the Graduates in Submarine Solutions, whose job it is to ensure the scheme delivers for you. Of course, Graduates at BAE Systems are expected to take responsibility for their own careers and development, but we offer the structure and support for you to take advantages of the very best opportunities.
PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
The GDF programme at BAE SYstems Submarine Solutions is fully accredited by IMechE, IET, IMAREST, IOM3, IOP and RINA, and you will be supported and encouraged to achieve chartership through these institutions.
Should you focus on a more business-related career, you'll be fully supported through membership of the relevant professional institutions, including the Chartered Institute of Purchase and Supply (CIPS), the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and the Association of Project Management (APM).
We also encourage study towards relevant further education, offering funding to study Masters degrees required for CEng status and Postgraduate courses in Project Management required for APM membership.
LOCATIONS
Submarine Solutions also has Astute and Swiftsure/Trafalgar class update teams located at Farnborough, in Hampshire, and at Weymouth, in Dorset. It also has Astute and Swiftsure/Trafalgar class integration facilities at Ash Vale in Surrey.
As part of the recruitment process for Submarines Solutions you'll attend an assessment centre. If you are applying for Engineering, Nuclear or Manufacturing and Production roles you'll also be invited to a technical interview at Barrow-in-Furness.
