BAE SYSTEMS to provide night vision goggle support

29 Oct 2002

BAE Systems Customer Solutions and Support (CS&S) has partnered with British company, Oxley Developments, to offer night vision compatible lighting services that will revolutionise the use of night vision goggle technology.

This is a key requirement for organisations such as defence forces and emergency services search and rescue that use night vision goggle technology.

The signing of the Commonwealth of Australia's ninth Defence Industry Involvement Recognition (DIIREC) Deed cements a long-term relationship between Oxley, Pacific Dynamics and BAE Systems Australia.

"We look forward to the opportunities that the execution of this agreement presents to all three companies and the Commonwealth of Australia," said Mr Harry Bradford, Managing Director CS&S, BAE Systems Australia.

Oxley Developments has implemented the technology into both the United Kingdom and United States armed forces over the last decade and will now transfer the world leading lighting conversion technology to BAE Systems Australia.

"BAE Systems has acquired the design and manufacturing technology from Oxley Developments for application to Australian Defence Force platforms," said Mr Bradford.

"BAE Systems now has the capability to modify lighting installations for fast jets, aircraft capable ships, helicopters and military vehicles to work effectively with Australian Defence Force personnel wearing night vision equipment."

Modifications are required for cockpits, instrument panels and external lighting which allow light sources to be viewed without degradation.

At BAE Systems Holden Hill facility in South Australia, a replica cockpit demonstrates the problems with existing lighting when viewed with night vision equipment and the available solutions through conversion to night vision friendly lighting.

Future technology transfer will include platform survey, conversion design and analysis, instrument modification and manufacture of specialist filter coatings.

"BAE Systems will provide engineering, facility and installation capabilities from its facility at Adelaide, South Australia," said Mr Bradford.

"With more than a decade of experience in night vision lighting conversions, the new partnership enhances BAE Systems reputation as a leading platform integrator and modifier."
