SOCIETY OF BLACK ENGINEERS AWARDS BAE SYSTEMS FOR COMMUNITY SERVICE

02 Mar 2009 | Ref. 044/2009

GREENBELT, Maryland — BAE Systems has received the 2009 Corporate Community Service and Education Partnership Award from the Washington, D.C., chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers. The award recognizes the company for its support of recruitment and technology programs that encourage young men and women to enter the field of engineering.

“This is the first year of this award, and we are pleased to present it to BAE Systems,” said William Ellis, chair of the society’s fourth-annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Awards Dinner and Gala. The award was presented Feb. 28 at the dinner, held in Greenbelt. “They have provided visionary leadership in promoting the growth of engineering through community service and partnerships.”

BAE Systems has long been committed to education in the U.S. and around the world. The company is a 2009 Strategic Partner of FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology). Through robotics competitions, FIRST encourages high school students across the country to pursue careers in engineering by promoting the importance of math, science, and technology.

The company also is dedicated to hiring aspiring engineers, including under-represented minorities, from U.S. colleges and universities. In 2008, BAE Systems hired more than 700 students from science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines into full-time and summer internship positions.

“We are honored to receive this award,” said Steve Metz, vice president of maritime programs for BAE Systems in Washington, D.C. “This is a great recognition for our employees who have reached out to the National Society of Black Engineers and assisted with teaching, mentoring, and inspiring young people throughout the region.”
