Logistics Support

BAE Systems is one of few OEMs with its own proven, in-house staff of professional Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) personnel for the development, management and analysis of product support activities, including technical publications, service life activities, training and provisioning, and we have provided premier logistical support to our customers for over a century.

To date, the FMTV has set the benchmark for excellence and has collectively logged 378 million miles (data obtained from OSMIS as of July 2006). The FMTV has over 56,000 vehicles currently fielded and leads the US Army with a 93.8 percent Operational Readiness Rate (data obtained from the U.S. Army Logistics Information Warehouse (LIW) as of July 2006) and is an important strategic element supporting the US Army tactical missions throughout the world.

Structure Supports Mission

The mission of Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) at BAE Systems is to "enhance Medium Heavy Vehicles (MHV) by providing world-class support products for our customer and timely access to information company-wide". Management recognized the need for the organizational structure to directly support this mission and provided accountability for performance directly to the Medium Heavy Vehicle President.

Logistics Support Approach

Toss’s Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) is focused on developing innovative logistical solutions for our customers. The ILS department includes a highly technical staff of statisticians, information technologists, engineers, logisticians, technical writers and graphic illustrators to provide the highest level of logistics support available.

BAE Systems has developed the most advanced Interactive Electronic Technical Manual (IETM) available today for the FMTV A1 and all subsequent vehicles. The FMTV IETM is the first Class 5 IETM, which is unique in its ability to plug into the central nervous system of the vehicle, via a J1939 databus, and interactively work with the vehicle’s four separate electronic control modules. The IETM serves all the maintenance and service functions of its hardbound predecessor, but is able to fault isolate vehicle problems, identify solutions, call out necessary tools and hardware and provide detailed repair instructions. Each section hotlinks to additional support information, such that the user can immediately access any ancillary data necessary. Digitizing this information has resulted in the vehicle support and repair data being reduced from approximately 30,000 paper pages to 3 CDs. The innovative use of technology by BAE Systems continues today.

ILS department closely manages program support activities through the use of Microsoft Project and Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) project plans. This tool is used to define the support tasks, milestones, resources, and measure the performance of the ILS department. This insures that each program is delivered on schedule, on budget and with the quality demanded by our customers.
