Headborne Energy Analysis and Diagnostic System (HEADS)

BAE Systems developed HEADS-Headborne Energy Analysis and Diagnostic System, a modular, helmet-integrated sensor package to record the severity of impacts to the head.

HEADS is characterized as a small, unobtrusive sensor package that is easily mounted inside most helmet types and provides constant, automatice data collection. Developed to understand the forces observed during blast, ballistic, crash and blunt impact events, the HEADS system collects sudden acceleration in the X, Y and Z axes as well as overpressure. Collecting and understanding the data collected helps assist in medical diagnoses, the treatment of head and brain trauma and the development of better protective equipment. HEADS utilizes commercial off-the-shelf rechargeable or replacement batteries and inlcudes a USB port for immediate data download.

BAE Systems HEADS Generation II takes this technology a step further and allows for data to include the exact times of single or multiple events to be recorded. Additionally, the new technology associated with HEADS Generation II provides quick data collection through both a USB port and wireless connection.
