BAE Systems is at the forefront of development of advanced gun technologies for the armed forces of the future. Through teaming with other world leaders in projectile development and advanced propellants, BAE Systems has created gun systems and projectiles that hold great promise for the artillery, main battle tank and infantry fighting vehicles of tomorrow.
This work has been focused around two technology sets: Electrothermal-Chemical (ETC) guns and Electromagnetic (EM) guns. ETC uses pulse power electrical energy to augment and control the release of chemical energy from conventional and advanced propellants.
EM gun research has focused on the acceleration of projectiles solely through the application of electricity to achieve ultra-high velocity without energetic materials. To accomplish this work, BAE Systems uses its large- and medium-caliber test sites located near Minneapolis, Minnesota.
