Insensitive Munitions

Land Systems is the first company in the world to manufacture and market high volume cast PBX Insensitive Munitions technology. Insensitive munitions offer much greater safety through the life of the ammunition system, greatly reducing the response to credible accidental threats.

Land Systems has made significant investment in Insensitive Munitions (IM) technologies over the last ten years. The investment has been focussed upon a concurrent systems approach to product design and the development of production capability and capacity. The commitment by BAE Systems is now coming to fruition.

At Glascoed, Land Systems has established two facilities for filling of ammunition, one to cater for Low Volume filling and the other High Volume filling.

 

Prior to investing in the new High Volume filling facility, Land Systems carried out an objective assessment of the relative merits of cast versus presses fillings and concluded that, on balance, the cast route was preferable. These findings were endorsed by an independent assessment carried out by QinetiQ. The Defence Ordnance Safety Group of the UK MOD has previously stated that castable PBX compositions are ‘the best available solution’. The cast PBX formulations used by Land Systems have been formulated, developed and qualified as a result of a long standing UK MOD industry programme.

 

Land Systems has demonstrated its commitment to IM filling by investing over £10m in the High Volume production facility. All processes to be used are well established within Land Systems and there will be a direct read across and hence continuity of production, from the Low Volume to the High Volume facilities. The facility has been fully modelled and simulated.
