Materials Science

The demands of the BAE Systems aerospace and defence businesses and the close connections with Airbus have led to a world-class capability in materials and manufacturing at the ATC. Our extensive clean room facilities and materials processes laboratories enable us to provide technology from the smallest nanostructures to large scale welding methods.

Micro Electromechanical Systems (MEMS)

The ATC has a comprehensive capability in MEMS from concept through detailed design to fabrication and evaluation. We have developed devices including world leading, bulk production silicon gyros and components for a host of other applications from microwave to bio chemical.

Smart Materials

We develop materials with added functionality such as embedded fibre optics and more recently 'printed-on' (direct write) sensors for structural and environmental monitoring. This capability extends to active concepts such as self-healing materials and smart structures.

Non-Destructive Test & Evaluation

The ATC has at its disposal a sizable array of test and evaluation skills and equipment. These include on-line X-ray, ultrasound and microwave facilities and a fully equipped surface analysis laboratory.

Miniaturisation and Packaging

The ATC has a team that specialises in the miniaturisation and integration aspects of products, sub-systems or systems. We strive to stay one step ahead of current technology by working with leading edge suppliers to develop their skills and products to support future products.

Manufacturing Processes

Advanced manufacturing and surface treatment capabilities are available at the ATC. Our skills include precision laser machining, novel metal welding processes, surface treatment with chemicals, laser and plasma techniques, 'direct-write' and rapid prototyping.
