Optically interfaced electronic crossbar switch
The ATC has a wide range of skills and expertise in the design, simulation, realisation and testing of components for optical communications systems. The capability is firmly rooted in optical fibre technology, both single mode for high bandwidth communications systems and multi-mode for specilaised communications systems. A burgeoning capability also exists in localised, free-space optical links for moblie or fixed communcations platforms.
The ATC develops new aspects of optical communications devices and subsystems by performing Risk Reduction Studies of the following form:
- Proof of Principle experiments
- Device/System Development
- Environmental Testing
- System Demonstrations
- Technology Transfer
These studies include fibre optic harness designs scoping cable and connector issues, proprietary modelling for characterising multi-mode optical fibre systems and compoenents, fibre optic termination methods and tools, environmental testing of functioning optical subsystems, new developments in optical switching technology and wavelength division multiplexing. Free space optical links have also been adapted and demonstrated between an unmanned mobile platform and a fixed station.
